I found the whole whiny thing just grating. Like, I liked the tantrums, the way he broke people with force of will even when it wasn't the best way to go about things. However, without the mask, he just whined. It might be better next movie now that he has actually paid for his mistakes, but for the current one, I feel like it could have been handled more effectively.

As for Rey, she was likable, but she wasn't interesting. She was a child prodigy in like three areas, everyone loved her except the villain who felt inadequate by her, has a tragic backstory, and never fails in anyway that matters. Now, I disagree that Mary Sues and Gary Stus are always bad, but she fits the mold.

I was in my local library and picked up a trillogy of book from the star wars series; Book 1: Heir to the Empire, Book 2: Dark Force Rising, Book 3: The Last Command all three were written by Timothy Zahn. This series takes place 5 years after Return of the Jedi. I just started reading it. (I'm only on chapter 5 of book 1) my question is does Force Awakens use these books as a jummping off point or is it a retelling of them?

Ah, that's the Thrawn trilogy! It's a good story, stick with it.

The answer to your question is neither- The Force Awakens is an entirely new story, and Word of God (well, Lucasfilm) says that anything taking place after RotJ that has been written before the Force Awakens was released is no longer part of the canon, meaning a lot of the Expanded Universe never takes place.

Here is a quick list of the revised canon for Star Wars.
Should still read the old novels cause they are good, but this is what is officially star wars now.

Thanks guys, while I'm not a rabbed fan of the Star Wars series the "Thrawn Trillogy" as you call it is so far very good. It's got just detail to keep a passing fan (like me) interested without going into detail to go over my head. Any other books you guys can suggest (cannon or otherwise) you guys can suggest would be great.
